
How a Differential Works: Open, LSD, and Locking Diffs
Here’s a fun fact: without a differential, your car would be nearly undriveable. Every time you turned, the inside wheel would skip and hop because it’s trying to cover less distance than the outside wheel at the same rotational speed. The differential solves this elegantly — but different types solve it in very different ways.
The Problem: Why Wheels Need to Spin at Different Speeds
When you turn, the outside wheel travels a longer arc than the inside wheel. It needs to spin faster. If both wheels are locked together on a solid axle, one of them has to slip. On dry pavement, that means tire scrub, handling nightmares, and snapped axles. On loose surfaces, it’s less catastrophic — but still far from ideal.
The differential sits between the drive wheels and distributes torque while allowing speed differences. How it distributes that torque is where things get interesting.
Open Differential: The Default
This is what most cars come with. An open diff uses a set of spider gears to allow each wheel to spin independently. It’s simple, cheap, and completely transparent in normal driving.
The fatal flaw: An open diff sends torque to the wheel with the least grip. If one wheel is on ice and the other is on dry pavement, the wheel on ice spins helplessly while the wheel with traction gets nothing. This is why your friend’s base-model pickup gets stuck in wet grass.
Open diffs are also the enemy of performance driving. Powering out of a corner, the inside wheel unloads and spins — the outside wheel, with all the grip, receives zero torque. You’re basically one-wheel-drive exactly when you need two.
Limited-Slip Differential (LSD): The Enthusiast’s Choice
An LSD limits the speed difference between the two wheels, forcing some torque to the wheel with more grip. There are several types:
Mechanical (Clutch-Type) LSD
Uses spring-loaded clutch packs that lock the axles together when torque is applied. More throttle = more lock. The classic muscle-car diff. It works brilliantly but can be noisy and requires periodic clutch pack replacement. The 1.5-way and 2-way variants determine whether the diff locks on acceleration only or both acceleration and deceleration — 1.5-way is the sweet spot for most street/track cars.
Torsen (Torque-Sensing) LSD
Uses worm gears instead of clutches. It’s purely mechanical, maintenance-free, and reacts to torque imbalance instantaneously. Torsens are smooth, silent, and don’t wear out — but they need at least some resistance on both wheels to work. Lift a wheel completely off the ground and a Torsen behaves like an open diff. That’s why off-roaders usually look elsewhere.
Viscous LSD
Uses a silicone fluid that thickens when heated by speed difference between the plates. Simple and cheap, but reactive rather than proactive — it takes a moment for the fluid to heat up and lock. Most modern “LSDs” in mainstream cars are actually viscous couplings. Better than an open diff, but not by much.
Electronic LSD (eLSD)
The modern solution. A computer-controlled clutch pack that can vary lockup from 0–100% based on sensors, driving mode, and driver inputs. The Focus RS and Hyundai Veloster N use these to great effect. They’re versatile and tunable but add complexity and weight.
Locking Differential: The Off-Road King
A locking diff completely eliminates the differential action — both wheels spin at exactly the same speed, no matter what. It’s the nuclear option.
Selectable lockers can be engaged and disengaged by the driver (electronically, pneumatically, or mechanically). On-road, you run an open diff. Find yourself axle-deep in mud, flip a switch, and both wheels claw you out together.
Automatic lockers engage when they detect wheel speed difference and disengage for normal turning. They’re cheaper than selectable lockers but can be unpredictable — they sometimes lock or unlock mid-corner, which is exciting in all the wrong ways.
Which Diff Is Right for You?
- Daily driver, never sees aggressive driving: Open diff is fine. You won’t miss what you’ve never felt.
- Canyon carver, track-day warrior: Get a proper mechanical LSD — clutch-type or Torsen. It’s the single best handling mod you can make to a FWD or RWD performance car.
- Off-roader: Selectable locker. Leave it open on the street, lock it up on the trail.
- Modern hot hatch owner: Your eLSD is probably already doing more than you realize. Trust the computers.
The Takeaway
The differential is where your engine’s power meets the road — literally. The right diff transforms a car from understeering frustration to rotation-happy joy. The wrong diff leaves power on the table and makes you slower than the car actually is.
